Most people buy a dining set and then discover it doesn’t fit. Here’s how to get it right before a single box is opened.

The single most common mistake in outdoor dining is buying first and measuring second. A 6-seater round table sounds manageable until it’s sitting in your garden with no room to pull out a chair. The fix is cheap and takes 20 minutes: a garden hose.

The garden hose method

Lay your hose on the ground in the shape of your proposed dining area. Include a 90cm clearance zone on all sides of the table.

Shape matters more than you think

Round tables are socially the best shape and fit awkward patio corners better than rectangular tables.
